ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Mike Boynton gets a second shot at running a major college program in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he inherits a Michigan team that enters the season as the defending national champion.
For two seasons, Boynton worked as an assistant on Dusty May’s staff. When May left after the title run to coach the Dallas Mavericks, Michigan first named Boynton interim coach, then gave him a two-year contract.
His earlier head coaching stop came at Oklahoma State, where he went 119-109 over seven seasons and reached one NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma State let him go when the 2023-24 team finished 12-20.
The new era starts Monday, Nov. 2, when the Wolverines host Oakland at 6 p.m. at Crisler Center, the 12,707-seat home of Michigan basketball. Four nights later, Michigan meets UConn in Boston in a rematch of the national title game.
The Wolverines warmed up with three exhibitions, the last an Oct. 25 meeting with Houston played in Grand Rapids at Van Andel Arena.
