SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Ann Arbor Hybrid, the mixed club ultimate team from Ann Arbor, Mich., won its third national title in a row on Sunday, Oct. 25, beating the San Francisco Polar Bears 15-13 in the mixed division final of the USA Ultimate club championships.
The run puts Hybrid in rare company. Only one other mixed team had won three straight club titles before this weekend.
The final was tight from the start. The Polar Bears took an 8-7 edge into halftime, and the Ann Arbor side answered with a break to go up 9-8. Hybrid later led 12-10, but San Francisco pulled even at 13. Hybrid held serve and then got one more break to close out the 15-13 win.
The championships were played at Surf Cup Sports Park in the San Diego area. The event got off to a rough start when USA Ultimate pushed back the first day because of forecast bad weather in Del Mar.
The win caps another long club season for the Ann Arbor team, which has now owned the top of the mixed division for three straight years.
