ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor is now home to a running research lab backed by a $25 million commitment from ASICS, the athletic shoe and apparel company based in Kobe, Japan.
The AMSI Lab opened Monday as the working space for the ASICS Michigan Sport Innovation Center, a research partnership the company and the university first unveiled last December. ASICS says it is the first lab of its kind that it has set up with a university.
Six U-M faculty members will lead the opening round of projects, ranging from robotics, materials science and biomechanics to design, computer vision and the way athletes make choices. Company scientists, product developers and athletes will work side by side with campus researchers to build and test prototypes.
Runners of every level are expected to give feedback as ideas move from the lab bench to the road, and the company expects the research to start shaping its running and performance products by 2028.
University President Domenico Grasso said the partnership reflects a shared belief that research should help people live and move well.
