PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Freshman quarterback Tommy Carr carried Michigan past Rutgers on Saturday, running 9 yards for the deciding score late in the fourth quarter of a 28-21 Big Ten win at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Carr, in only his second career start, piled up more than 300 total yards. On the winning drive he moved the chains on three third downs, twice through the air and once on the ground.
The Wolverines scored on each of their first two possessions, a touchdown catch by JJ Buchanan and a run by Jordan Marshall, and Carr scrambled 15 yards for another score in the third quarter. Kicker Trey Butkowski missed two field goals, and Rutgers drew even at 21 with a touchdown and two-point try early in the fourth.
Michigan improved to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference, while Rutgers fell to 2-6.
The rivalry game with Michigan State comes next, at home in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 7, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff streaming on Peacock. The day is billed as a Blue Out and Military Appreciation Game.
