Character

Burns Park exudes a quintessential Ann Arbor character — diverse, educated, civic-minded, and resolutely pedestrian-scaled. The housing stock is primarily Craftsman bungalows, Dutch Colonials, and Tudor Revivals built between 1905 and 1940, with mature tree canopy overarching the sidewalks. The Burns Park Neighborhood Association is one of Michigan's most organized residential civic groups, coordinating the annual Burns Park Run, block parties, and advocacy before City Council. Residents tend to be faculty, physicians, attorneys, and professionals who value proximity to campus, good schools, and the walkable Ann Arbor lifestyle.

History

Burns Park was one of Ann Arbor's first planned residential expansions beyond the original city plat, developed in the early 1900s on land that had previously been farmland southeast of the University of Michigan campus. The neighborhood was named for Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, consistent with the neighborhood's early British-inflected naming conventions. The city park at its center was established in the early 20th century and remains its anchor social space. Burns Park has consistently been one of Ann Arbor's most desirable addresses throughout its history.
