ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan State beat Michigan 15-6 at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday and took home the Paul Bunyan Trophy without scoring a touchdown.
The Spartans got all of their points from five field goals and leaned on their defense, which took the ball away four times and held the Wolverines to 192 total yards. Michigan State finished with 298.
The visitors led 6-0 at halftime and stretched it to 9-0 on a third Liam Boyd kick in the third quarter. Michigan moved the ball past midfield only twice all game, and a forced fumble by Anelu Lafaele stopped one of its better drives.
Michigan State came in as a two-touchdown underdog. The win snapped a four-game Michigan streak in the series and gave Pat Fitzgerald his first Big Ten victory as the Spartans head coach.
Michigan travels to Oregon next Saturday, while Michigan State plays host to Washington.
