ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Washtenaw County prosecutors have green-lighted a criminal case against University of Michigan student Temulun Togochog stemming from a Nov. 1 free-speech gathering on the Ann Arbor campus.
The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office said the file arrived Monday and that staff went through the submitted evidence before approving the case. Togochog is accused of shoving Jewish content creator Benichou during the gathering and of resisting campus officers when they stepped in.
Charging papers outline three counts: one alleging that she assaulted, resisted or obstructed a police officer, plus a pair of assault-and-battery counts. Office staffer Alyssa Fountain said the court will issue a felony warrant and set a hearing after an arraignment; none had been calendared when the authorization was announced.
Video shared online appeared to show a woman identified as Togochog arguing near a campus table with commentators Cam Higby and Joe Redden, then pushing Benichou down before another person pulled her off. University of Michigan Police Department officers took the student into custody at the scene.
Campus police later said the student was processed and released while the file moved to prosecutors. The University of Michigan condemned the violence, saying physical force has no place on campus, and noted that federal privacy rules limit what it can say about individual student discipline.
