ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Not every police report in Ann Arbor requires an officer at your door. Depending on what happened, residents can file online, call it in or walk in to the police desk at any hour.

Emergencies and crimes in progress always go to 911. To have an officer come to you for a non-emergency report, call non-emergency dispatch at 734-994-2911 and press 8.

The city police desk on the second floor of the Justice Center on East Huron Street takes walk-in reports 24 hours a day, and can also be reached by phone around the clock at 734-794-6920. Police ask people to come with as much detail as they can, such as names, contact information, descriptions and serial numbers. For a crash, bring registration, insurance and driver information for every vehicle involved.

Some reports can be filed online through a regional system called CLEMIS when there is no emergency and no known suspect. That covers harassing phone calls, thefts, vandalism, identity theft and lost property, plus a parked car that was struck on private property.

Online filers get a temporary confirmation number, not a report number. Within 72 hours, the department sends notice that the report was approved, with an incident number and instructions for getting a copy, or explains why it was not. The system warns that knowingly lying on a report is itself a crime.

Lost, found and case-related property is handled by the department’s property unit, which asks owners to call before coming in. The records section releases official police records under city policy, the state’s open records law and Michigan’s law enforcement records retention schedule.
