ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan defensive coordinator Jay Hill thinks his group can rank among the best in college football, though he told reporters in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Wednesday that it still has work to do.
Hill, in his first season with the Wolverines, pointed to takeaways as the missing piece. He said the loss to Indiana turned on the turnover margin, with the Hoosiers cashing in on short fields inside the Michigan 25-yard line, including two field goals and the overtime possession.
He also wants more heat on opposing quarterbacks. Among individual players, he singled out safety Chris Bracy for his physical play near the line and credited defensive lineman Tariq Boney for steady growth through the season.
Hill, 51, came to Ann Arbor after three years at BYU. He ran Weber State from 2014 to 2022, winning four straight Big Sky titles and a Coach of the Year award in 2020, and he said he would welcome another head coaching job at the FBS level one day.
For now, Hill said, his attention stays on Michigan. A former Utah cornerback, he got his first coaching job in 2001, working for the Utes as a grad assistant.
