ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Fans packing Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor for Saturday’s Michigan-Indiana game on Oct. 24 will be asked to help chase another world record, this time for recycling. The fourth Recycle Bowl returns to the Big House that day, and organizers want to top last season’s total.
At the 2025 game against Washington, fans and workers gathered more than 47,000 pounds of recyclables and compostables, a world record for a college game day. That beat the roughly 44,000 pounds collected in 2024 and 40,000 pounds in the first year, 2023. On a typical home game day, the stadium recycles about 6.5 tons.
Marked bins will be set up across the stadium and nearby game day areas for plastic bottles, cans and paper. Bottles stamped with the No. 1 PET symbol are the ones the program most wants in those bins.
Family activities are planned, and the state environment department, the Michigan Recycling Coalition and two plastics companies, Plastipak Packaging and Husky Technologies, are taking part. Paul Dunlop, a Michigan associate athletic director, said the event shows how fan energy can drive real change.
