The seasonal calendar runs from the first Friday night kickoff of August through a late-spring finale. Fall drives football and volleyball under Michigan High School Athletic Association governance; winter shifts to hardwood basketball and wrestling; spring delivers baseball, softball, soccer, track, and tennis. Few Southeast Michigan counties match the density of competition nights per week, the breadth of classifications in play, or the decades of local rivalry that fill bleachers every season.
The local prep schools include Pioneer High School (Pioneers), Huron High School (River Rats), Skyline High School (Eagles), Community High School (Rainbow Zebra (informal)), Greenhills School (Gryphons), Father Gabriel Richard High School (Fighting Irish). At the collegiate level: University of Michigan Wolverines (NCAA Division I FBS); Eastern Michigan University Eagles (NCAA Division I FBS); Washtenaw Community College (Non-athletic 2yr); Concordia University Ann Arbor Cardinals (NAIA).
