ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Yousef Rabhi claimed victory Tuesday night in the race for Ann Arbor mayor, finishing a run that began with his upset of the sitting mayor last summer.
Rabhi, a Washtenaw County commissioner who previously served in the Michigan House, beat Mayor Christopher Taylor in the August Democratic primary. In the general election he carried 97% of the vote against a late write-in bid by Elizabeth Kurtz, who ran on helping unhoused residents find stable footing and drew under 3%.
Rabhi has said his first priority is uniting residents after a bruising stretch in city politics.
One of the night’s outcomes did not go his way. Rabhi had endorsed Proposal E, the charter amendment that would have required a city-run electric utility, but it failed with 51.83% voting no. Taylor and most of the current City Council opposed that measure, which means DTE Energy remains the city’s power company as Rabhi takes office.
