ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Ann Arbor, Mich., Planning Commission voted unanimously on Tuesday night, Oct. 6, to approve a revised, taller version of The Crescent, an apartment project planned for 2525 Ann Arbor-Saline Road on the city’s south side next to the Whole Foods store.
The new plan raises the building to seven stories, with 287 apartments on six floors above a parking level. That is 25 more units than the five-story, 262-unit version that won approval a year ago. City records list the Planning Commission as the approving body for the revised site plan, which supersedes the earlier one.
City records show the history: in October 2025, City Council rezoned the vacant parcel for multiple-family housing and approved the original five-story building. A new site plan increasing the height was submitted in May 2026. The building footprint shrank in the redesign, with parking moved under the building at ground level.
The unit mix calls for 12 studios, 209 one-bedroom units, 57 two-bedroom units and nine three-bedroom units, along with about 6,500 square feet of indoor amenity space and about 30,000 square feet of outdoor amenity space. Plans show 216 garage spaces and 63 surface parking spaces. Vehicles would use the existing curb cut on Ann Arbor-Saline Road shared with the Cranbrook Village shopping center, plus a new curb cut on Oakbrook Drive.
Commission Chair Donnell Wyche raised the city rule requiring 40% of the site to remain open space, calling it a trade-off between open land and housing, and said the discussion was useful as the city moves to carry out its new comprehensive land-use plan. Commissioner Sara Hammerschmidt said she wished the project went beyond baseline sustainability, such as all-electric design or rooftop solar.
The commission the same night also recommended that City Council approve a rezoning to allow an additional duplex at 530 S. Division St., where an existing rental house would stay.
