Ann Arbor, Mich. — Stephenson Ceramics Gallery, which has operated for more than 60 years at 4380 Waters Road in Ann Arbor, is closing as it moves its collection into the Stephenson Ceramics Legacy Project.
The gallery is open for limited hours, Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., while it sells its remaining inventory. Oct. 17, 2026, is the deadline to acquire pieces from the gallery. Shoppers can browse what is left online before booking an in-person viewing appointment.
The studio is tied to ceramic artists Susanne and John Stephenson, who were both founding members of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts when it launched in 1966. John Stephenson cohosted the group conference at the University of Michigan in 1980, and both were named honorary members in 2002.
The legacy project is producing two comprehensive catalogues to document the work of both artists, and it is still raising money to finish them. Donors of $25 to $100 receive test tiles as gifts.
