DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions are building Week 9 around a simple charge: prepare and play like 46, with linebacker Jack Campbell still recovering in the hospital after a neck injury in Sunday’s win over Minnesota.
Campbell released a Wednesday update saying he has full movement in his lower body and is gaining ground with movement in his upper body. He thanked supporters, said he remains optimistic, and is taking the recovery one day at a time.
At the Meijer Performance Center, head coach Dan Campbell told the roster the Miami game is not being postponed and that the best way to honor Jack is to stay locked in. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard made Play like 46 the week’s theme after an open team meeting.
Linebacker Derrick Barnes said one of the keys to victory is preparing like No. 46, with Malcolm Rodriguez also in line to share defensive communication duties. Aidan Hutchinson said the group will think of Campbell and take care of business on the road Sunday.
Coaches are pairing that urgency with balance, acknowledging the emotional weight while pushing the club to attack practice the way Campbell would ahead of the Dolphins matchup.
