YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Fifteen people lost their homes Tuesday morning, Nov. 3, when a three-alarm fire swept through a building at the Fairway Trails apartment complex in Ypsilanti Township, near South Hewitt and Ellsworth roads.
Ypsilanti Township firefighters reached the complex around 6:30 a.m. and found the ground floor fully involved. The flames climbed through the building and broke through the roof, leaving the roof, walls and several balconies badly damaged.
Fire Chief Steve Densmore said crews got all 15 residents out. Paramedics evaluated one older resident for smoke inhalation. Red Cross volunteers are assisting the families who lost their apartments with places to stay and medications.
Departments from the city of Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Township, Pittsfield Township and Superior Township sent crews to help. The fire was largely knocked down by about 9 a.m., though firefighters stayed on scene to chase hot spots.
Investigators have not yet determined what started the fire.
