SUNRISE, Fla. — Two goals 45 seconds apart early in the third period carried the Detroit Red Wings past the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Monday night, on an evening that also brought Carter Mazur his first NHL goal.
Mazur opened the scoring 5:26 into the game, taking a Moritz Seider rim-around and snapping a wrist shot past Jacob Markstrom from the left circle. Sam Reinhart answered for Florida late in the first, and the teams traded goals again in the second: Alex DeBrincat finished a 3-on-1 rush off a Viktor Arvidsson pass for his seventh goal of the season, and Aaron Ekblad tied it shorthanded when his backhand from below the goal line caromed in off goalie Daniil Tarasov’s skate.
Detroit broke it open with a man advantage 2:08 into the third, when Justin Faulk one-timed a pass from Andrew Copp. At 2:53, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard drove the net and converted a shovel pass from Lucas Raymond for a 4-2 lead that held up as the winner. Sam Bennett pulled the Panthers within one with Markstrom pulled at 16:40, but Emmitt Finnie sealed it with his seventh goal of the year in the closing seconds.
Faulk and Brandsegg-Nygard each finished with a goal and an assist, and Copp and Seider had two assists apiece. Tarasov, who spent last season with Florida, stopped 23 shots against his old team, while Markstrom, back in net for the first time since Oct. 17 after an upper-body injury, turned aside 24.
The win came two days after a 5-4 loss to St. Louis and moved Detroit to 7-5-3, with three wins in its last four games. Florida, now 8-5-2, saw a three-game winning streak end. The Red Wings visit Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.
