Benson and James Make Closing Pitches in Michigan Gov. Race

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — Michigan two candidates for governor split up the map on Friday for the final weekend before the Nov. 3 election, each working to turn out supporters in a race that will decide who succeeds Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Democratic nominee Jocelyn Benson rallied in Macomb County with her party candidates for the Legislature, arguing that a Democratic majority in both the House and Senate would let her move faster on her agenda. Her stated priorities are bringing down what families pay for health care, housing and utilities and adding better-paying jobs. She also told supporters she is ready to work with Republicans if the GOP keeps control of one chamber or both.

Republican nominee John James headed north for a rally in Grand Traverse County with his running mate, Rep. Jay DeBoyer of the state House.

Benson, who as secretary of state oversees Michigan elections, said nearly 2 million residents had already cast ballots, and both campaigns are now focused on voters who have not.

Taxes on the marijuana industry are one of the sharper contrasts between the tickets. James has promised to repeal or deeply cut the 24% wholesale marijuana tax that was passed to fund roads, saying it raises prices and helps illegal sellers. DeBoyer filed a bill this week to suspend it for a year. Benson has not taken a firm position, calling the tax a new issue that needs more data on where the money goes, while warning against tax changes that drive up costs for residents.
