ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Ann Arbor opened and dedicated its rebuilt Fire Station No. 4 on Friday, a building the city calls the first net-zero, carbon-neutral fire station in Michigan.

The station at 2415 S. Huron Parkway now carries the name of Mindy Kerr, the first woman to serve as an Ann Arbor firefighter. Kerr was on the job from 1980 until she retired in 2005.

Sixteen geothermal wells run beneath the building, and its roof is covered with solar panels. The original Station No. 4 dated to 1966, and the new one is the first fire station Ann Arbor has built since 1981. It opened after several construction delays.

Inside, each firefighter now gets a private room, and the station adds gender-neutral amenities and better access for fire trucks. Out front stands Three Ladder Fire, a 24-foot sculpture by artist Christopher Fennell made from retired department ladders shaped into a flame.
