ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham said Monday in Ann Arbor that his offense has to get better fast, but he stopped short of promising staff changes after the Wolverines fell to 4-3 with a 13-6 overtime loss to Indiana.

The Wolverines managed only six points and 224 yards against the Hoosiers despite running 74 plays, and they came away empty on four trips inside the red zone. For the season, Michigan is averaging 20.3 points and 300.6 yards a game under offensive coordinator Jason Beck.

Whittingham said he has made hard staffing calls in the past and would again if needed, but he does not think the moment calls for panic. He pointed out that his team is only a few plays from being unbeaten, largely because of a defense that leads the nation in yards allowed per play and ranks second in total defense.

He said the problem is not one thing, and that coaches are still searching for plays that fit what their players do well. He called the line’s showing against Indiana probably its weakest of the year.

Michigan has not picked a starting quarterback for its Halloween game at Rutgers, a 12:30 p.m. kickoff in New Jersey. Tommy Carr and Bryce Underwood are both in the mix, and Whittingham said Carr should not be blamed for the offense’s troubles.
