ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan’s quarterback change played out in full view Saturday inside the Big House in Ann Arbor, with freshman Tommy Carr taking the first snap against No. 6 Indiana and former No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood watching from the sideline.

Underwood did not disappear. He walked out as a game captain for the coin toss, fired up the team huddle before kickoff and hugged Carr during warmups. Carr said afterward that Underwood stayed beside him the entire game, studying film with him and lifting him up after mistakes.

There were plenty of those in the 13-6 overtime loss. Carr went 20 of 32 for 167 yards but lost a fumble on a pitch and threw an interception off a deflection, and both turnovers led to Hoosier field goals. He took the blame for both. He was also sacked four times, two of them deep in Indiana territory.

Underwood played sparingly, losing a yard on one run in the second quarter. The sophomore had thrown six interceptions against five touchdown passes this season before he was pulled at halftime against Penn State, when Carr rallied Michigan to a 21-18 win.

First-year coach Kyle Whittingham said Carr will keep improving and should not be judged on one game. Carr is the grandson of Lloyd Carr, who coached Michigan to the 1997 national title.
