Ann Arbor Council Makes Carey Street One-Way, Buys Signal Cameras

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Ann Arbor City Council signed off Monday night on three traffic items city officials pitched as safety moves, including turning Carey Street into a one-way road for northbound drivers.

The Carey Street change carried on a voice vote after Council member Radina made the motion and Council member Cornell seconded it.

Council also approved a $90,000 sole source order through Traffic Control Products for Miovision detection equipment. City spokesperson Robert Kellar has said the Miovision cameras do a far better job than the metal detectors buried at many intersections that tell signals a car is waiting.

The third item buys and installs an upgraded video wall for the city Traffic Management Center. Smart Homes, Inc. will do the work for $148,029.48 under the state MiDEAL purchasing program. Staff watch traffic flow from that room, and it also gets heavy use on football Saturdays and during other big events. The existing wall has run out of room to add more feeds.

All three were placed on the consent agenda, the batch of routine items council usually approves without debate.
