ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Ann Arbor has city police, two nearby university public safety departments and a county sheriff, and the right one to call depends on the problem.

Loud party next door: Call non-emergency police dispatch while the noise is still going on, at 734-994-2911, so an officer can be sent. That number also reaches the county’s metro dispatch center, which handles requests for removing a dead animal from public property.

On campus: The University of Michigan has its own Division of Public Safety and Security, which sends emergency alerts, offers a free safety app for Android and iOS phones and publishes an annual campus safety report with crime statistics. City police also point people to Eastern Michigan University public safety.

Fingerprints: City police take fingerprints only when the 15th District Court orders them, on Wednesday mornings and afternoons at the front desk in the Justice Center. Anyone who needs prints for another reason is sent to the Washtenaw County sheriff’s office on Hogback Road.

Victims and witnesses: City police refer crime victims and witnesses to the victim and witness services unit in the Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office.

Complaints and compliments: Residents can submit a complaint or a compliment about the department or an officer, and can raise concerns about traffic enforcement, through the city police website. For general questions, the police front desk is at 734-794-6920. In an emergency, call 911.
